The PAC needs You!

5/18/2016

We Need You!
Our PAC is an active group that has accomplished many things for the school and students. However, to maintain our programs and school support we need new volunteers with fresh energy and new ideas.

Please consider volunteering.

The PAC welcomes help for any our initiatives. We recognize that we are all busy parents and welcome as much or little time as you can contribute. Any time you can give is very much appreciated and makes a difference for our school and children.

All elected positions will be open for re-election at the PAC AGM on Tuesday, May 24. We encourage you to come out to learn more about our volunteer opportunities.

Below is a list of elected positions that currently have no nominees (will be vacant). Please consider whether you might be able to help.

Fundraising Coordinator (elected position)
The Fundraising Coordinator is in charge of coordinating and overseeing fundraising projects such as the Entertainment Book sales, Family Photo Night, Winter Bake Sale, Sports Day Concession and any other fundraiser they and the PAC decide upon. This position would suit someone with a passion for fundraising, teamwork and with good organizational skills. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.
We are also looking for specific fundraising campaign team leads. These positions are perfect for volunteers who want to commit to a smaller or finite job.
  • Entertainment Book Fundraiser Team Lead (Early Fall)
The entertainment book fundraiser has been a lucrative fundraiser for the PAC in the past. The Team Lead recruits and organizes the volunteers and runs the overall campaign.
  • Movie Night Coordinator
PAC reserves the gym one Friday night per month during the school year.  Movie nights can be held once a month or on alternating months.  We have licensing though the school district office that allows us to choose movies to show from an available list. We can also get one pre-release DVD per year. Other duties include making sure the concession is well stocked, setting up the projector, DVD player and speakers and organizing volunteers.

Treasurer (elected position)
The Treasurer is responsible for the financial tracking, payments, reconciliation and managing of the PAC bank and electronic payment accounts, and reconciliation of the PAC annual budget. This position is best co-chaired. Experience in accounting or book keeping is required. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

Traffic Safety Coordinator (elected position)
Our children’s safety when arriving and leaving school is of the utmost importance. By addressing traffic safety, this volunteer position helps keep our kids safe and helps keep our parents calm too! The Traffic Safety Coordinator organizes the volunteers who help with crosswalk duty and or parking lot duty on weekday mornings or afternoons. This does not require a large time commitment (you can choose as many or few shifts as you like) and no prior experience is required. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

We are also always in need of Traffic Safety Team Members. Team members are not an elected position and can involve as little as one shift per week.

After School Programs Co-coordinator (elected position)
The PAC After School Programs are a very popular and successful PAC initiative. Since our programming has grown over the last couple of years, we are looking for a 2nd and even 3rd volunteer. We recommend that 2 or more people do this position together. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

Website Manager (elected position)
The Website Co-Manager helps keep our PAC website up to date. The PAC website is used to communicate to the parents, be a go-to place to find out about the PAC, and to support the many PAC activities such as afterschool activity registration, event ticket sales and volunteer sign up. Currently, we have one nominee but need a second to help make sure the latest news updates are posted on the website in a timely manner. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

DPAC Representative (elected position)
The DPAC Representative attends the monthly Disctict43 DPAC meetings on behalf of the Walton PAC and will keep the PAC up to date on DPAC activities. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

Social Coordinator (elected position)
The Social Coordinator organizes refreshments at the PAC meetings and organises the first day of school welcome coffee for parents in the gym. This position will be elected at our AGM as per our bylaws.

All of the PAC official positions are up for election at our AGM on Tuesday May 24th.

Other positions up for election are:
  • President
  • Secretary
  • Health and Safety Coordinator
  • Hot Lunch Coordinator
  • Communications Coordinator (Newsletter Coordinator in our Bylaws)
  • Classroom Liaison Coordinator
  • Multicultural Liaison
  • Grade 5 Traffic Coordinator
  • Sunshine Committee
  • Gardening Program Coordinator

For more information on any elected position please see our by-laws on the PAC Website > About Us page.

What has the PAC done this year?

5/18/2016

What has the PAC been up to this year? We invite and encourage you to come to the PAC meetings (next meeting is the PAC AGM on Tuesday May 24 at 6:45 pm) to find out more.

Our PAC is an active group. We welcome and look forward to new volunteers and ideas to better support our children and school.  Some of the initiatives run by the PAC include:
  • Regular PAC Meetings (8 per year) – These meetings are not just for PAC business and planning but are an important communication point with the school. We encourage you to come out.
  • After School Activity Programs – A variety of programs (including academic, arts, science and sports) are offered over three sessions through the year. Over a third of our students take advantage of these programs.
  • Emergency Supplies – The PAC maintains, organizes and purchases emergency supplies – we hope we will never need these supplies but if we do, we are ready.
  • Gardening Program – The PAC funds and has been instrumental in bringing the gardening program and gardening boxes (by the upper playground) to Walton. This year four divisions took part in this program where they learned about seeds, plants, soil, worms and more. They also learned about healthy cooking and how the plants they grow turn into food on the table.
  • Newsletters, Website, and Weekly Mouthful (email) - To keep our parent community up to date, we have a website, a monthly newsletter, and a weekly email.
  • Classroom Liaisons – The PAC facilitates the election of classroom liaisons for each class. This supports and encourages easier communication with the teachers and within the class parent community.
  • Multicultural Support – The PAC recognizes that Walton is made up of families from a diverse group of cultures and languages. We have volunteer multicultural liaisons who translate PAC communications and make recommendations on how best to reach our entire parent/guardian community.
  • Community Building Events – This year the PAC put on a Swap Meet/Sale and the Monster Mash Halloween Family Dance. The previous two years we have held a large spring community event (Mother’s Day Tea afternoon event and the Sip N Savour evening event). These are popular community building events and important fundraisers for us and they are a lot of fun!
  • Traffic Safety – PAC volunteers help keep our children safe before and after school by monitoring the parking lot and supervising and training teams of Grade 5 students to control the crosswalk.
  • Hot Lunches – The PAC offered 11 hot lunches and raised over $5800. New entrees were offered including Flying Wedge pizza, Subway sandwiches, Moa Box sushi, Fuel Catering pastas, and Taco Del Mar tacos and burritos. A new on-line ordering system was also introduced.
  • Movie Nights – Popular events with the children and great fundraisers for the PAC.
  • Supplemental Workshops – The PAC will periodically bring in workshops for children such as sexual health workshops and boys & girls empowerment workshops. These are entirely optional and run on a cost recovery basis.
  • Fundraising Events to support initiatives at the school.  These fundraisers are the monetary engine that allow the PAC to financially support activities at the school.
    • Read-a-thon to support our school library (over $14000 raised)
    • Entertainment book sales
    • Family photo nights
    • Sports day concession
    • Winter concert bake sale
    • Popcorn, freezie and ice-cream sales
  • Support School Needs and Activities. The PAC fundraising enables us to support our school and students financially by funding items and events including:
    • Library books
    • Fieldtrip bus funding
    • Upper and lower playground equipment (the upper playground was replaced in 2015)
    • Classroom smartboards
    • Classroom document cameras and projectors
    • Kindergarten iPads
    • Classroom support funds to enable teachers to purchase classroom supplies
    • Performances brought in by the school
    • Classroom area rugs
    • Support bursaries to ensure all children can take part in activities
    • and more

All PAC activities are entirely run by volunteers, without which none of the above could be achieved.

We invite all parents and guardians to join us at our final two PAC meetings of the year on Tuesday May 24th and Tuesday June 14th at 6:45pm in the school library.
